Building work on a church left unfinished for 150 years looks set to finally be completed.

St John The Evangelist on West Lane in Killingworth, North Tyneside, is a Grade II-listed structure built in 1869.

Documents submitted to North Tyneside council show the church's north aisle was never completed leaving "an unattractive and unfinished facade."

Angela Henderson, church warden, has applied to the authority for permission to extend the facade and create a new access with a lobby, library and toilet.

Planning documents said the church's entrance presented "an uncomfortable and undignified entry for ceremonial occasions", reports the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Earlier this year, the church said it hoped to raise £600,000 to complete the work, as well as restoring its organ, made by prolific organ builder Robert Postill.
