A man who seriously injured a motorcyclist in a crash which he caused while driving on the wrong side of a dual carriageway has been jailed.
Ardit Shehi drove in the wrong lane in Stanwell Moor Road, Stanwell, for about 20 seconds before he turned into a blind bend and collided with a motorbike, Surrey Police said.
The rider, a man in his 20s, was thrown into the air and over a fence, and was left with life-changing injuries.
At Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday, Shehi, 35, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
Shehi, of Uxbridge, initially attempted to walk away from the crash on 3 July, but was detained at the scene by witnesses until police arrived.
He was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance.
He was also disqualified from driving for nine years and eight months.
'Entirely avoidable outcome'
Det Con Matt Lloyd said the incident had “truly devastating repercussions” for the victim, who will require care for the rest of his life.
“Choosing to carry out dangerous manoeuvres like Shehi did here put not only himself, but all other innocent road users at risk,” Mr Lloyd said.
“This tragic case had an entirely avoidable outcome, and I urge all motorists to think before you act when travelling on our roads.
"I hope that Shehi spends his time behind bars reflecting on the consequences of his actions.”
