Heavy rain and flooding causes disruption in city

Roads, parkways and footpaths in a city have become "inaccessible" due to flooding caused by heavy rains, according to residents.

The affected areas in Peterborough include the Fletton Parkway overpass bridge, Gresley Way in Westwood under the A47 bridge, Paston Parkway, spots around the Central Park such as Park Road, and the North Bank between Pearces Road and Dog in a Doublet in Whittlesey.

Across other parts of Cambridgeshire there are reports of flooding and road closures in Earith, Little Paxton, and parts of St Ives, including Wheatfield's park and Pig Lane.

On Tuesday the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning, covering every county in the East of England until 16:00 BST.

Huntingdonshire District Council said flood warnings are in place for areas around the River Great Ouse near Wyboston, Eaton Socon and St Neots in Cambridgeshire.

Peterborough’s Nene Park has been described as “badly hit” and a spokesperson said a “majority of paths around the lakes in Ferry Meadows are inaccessible due to flooding”.

The Park’s Nene Outdoors centre is also closed due to the weather, but it is likely to reopen on Thursday.

Shoppers have reported flooding and leaks from the roof in the Queensgate bus depot, located within the shopping centre.

Bedford Hall, a community centre in Thorney, said it has had to shut the venue due to a leaky roof.

“We have had another leak through the roof at Bedford Hall into our chair cupboard.

“We have contacted hirers for the next couple of days to advise that the hall won't be able to be used in the next day and will reassess the situation on Wednesday evening as to whether any other bookings need to be cancelled,” the venue said.

The regional bus operator, Stagecoach East, said that due to flooding near the Fletton Parkway in Peterborough, services 31, 33 and 5A will be diverted until further notice.

Stagecoach East added that in Cambridge the bus services have been hit “due to heavy congestion and multiple road closures due to flooding across the network”. It warned customers that there were delays of up to an hour across Busway A and B routes.

Forecasters said further showers could cause transport disruption, localised flooding and some interruption to power supplies.
