A suspected burglar has been arrested while fleeing the scene of a break-in at a supermarket.

North Yorkshire Police said they were called to a report of a burglary at the Sainsbury's local in Bootham, York, at about 04:30 GMT on Friday.

When officers arrived, they saw two suspects cycling away, and subsequently arrested one man, aged 39, on suspicion of burglary. The other man escaped, the force said.

A police spokesperson said a glass panel at the shop had been broken, with "items inside disturbed".

Police said officers were also investigating damage to another shop nearby, on Gillygate, and undertaking forensic searches of both locations.
