Pupils, including from Brackenfield SEND School, came up with names for six new bin lorries in total

Schoolchildren who named a bin lorry Recyclo Saurus and another Mighty Recycler were treated to a visit by the two vehicles.

The pair of 26-tonne vehicles rolled up at Brackenfield SEND School in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, on Monday, when pupils got the chance to operate the lorries and climb inside the cabs.

Students have built up a rapport with council workers who collect the bins at the school every Friday, according to head teacher Trish Turner.

Peter Csizmadia, associate lead and class teacher, added: "I can see the excitement in their faces, it's like another Christmas for them."

The picture shows the back of two bin lorries. Two people in High vis vests are showing a little girl how to attach a bin at the back. A boy in a black coat and a red coat are watching with their backs to the camera. Another boy in a wheelchair wearing a blue coat is also watching.

Brackenfield is one of two schools that were asked by Erewash Borough Council to pick the names, which are now emblazoned on six new bin lorries.

Ms Turner said: "They've been coming for years on a Friday morning and really engage with our young people.

"Our children are really interested in the lorries, what happens with the recycling, with the rubbish, and engaging with their crews."

One of the lorries has been named after a student at Brackenfield called Jerome, 11, who was given a VIP tour of the council's depot because he loves bin lorries so much.

Tilly is wearing a bright blue fleece zipped up under her chin. She is smiling at the camera. The background is blurred but you can make out the back of a bin lorry and people crowded around it.

Nine-year-old pupil Tilly was shown how to tip the bins at the back of the lorry, and added: "It was really good, I love it so much, I like the bins going up."

Pupils from Bennerley Fields School in Ilkeston also picked some of the "wacky" names that were chosen by the council, said councillor Mark Alfrey, lead member for environment.

He added: "The imaginative suggestions have not only made our trucks more memorable, but brought a sense of community spirit to keeping our borough clean."

The other names include Rocket the Recycler, Waste Wizard and Garbage Guzzler.
