New blue plaque scheme launched by council

A blue plaque for William Barratt has been placed on the Barratt Maternity Home in Northampton

People are being invited to nominate famous residents for a new Blue Plaque scheme.

The initiative, started by West Northamptonshire Council, aims to recognise remarkable individuals and groups who have left a lasting legacy.

Eight new plaques could be installed across the county as a result of the project.

Daniel Lister from the local authority said: "This Blue Plaque Scheme offers a fantastic opportunity for our communities to celebrate local heritage and ensure these stories continue to inspire future generations."

Applications are open until 31 March.

Nominees must have died at least 20 years ago, made a significant contribution to the area, not been previously recognised with a blue plaque, and have a strong connection to a surviving local site.

A panel of historical and cultural experts, alongside community representatives, will review the nominations.

The eight plaques could be installed from September onward.
