A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after a car that was reported to have been stolen crashed into a street sign and fence.

Leicestershire Police said shortly before 21:30 BST on Sunday, officers came across a BMW, which was believed to have been taken from Glenfield in Leicester earlier in the evening.

The driver failed to stop, the force said, and a pursuit took place before the car crashed in Abbey Park Road.

The 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. No injuries were reported, police added.

The boy remains in custody and police inquiries are ongoing.
