The closure of a Bristol social club has caused shock and disappointment in the community.

A hand-written sign on the entrance to Patchway Sports and Social Club, in south Gloucestershire, reads "closed as of immediate effect," with Patchway Town Council confirming the club had lapsed on its insurance.

The club posted a statement on its Facebook page saying there was "no choice but to close".

One club member said the closure will have an effect on the older population in the town as it is often the "only time" they get to socialise.

The club has been in the centre of Norman Scott Park since 1977 and some of its regulars told BBC Radio Bristol they were "shocked" by the closure.

Community member Jen said: "I've been playing bingo there for years and years, I'm really going to miss it.

"It was a night out and it's not very often I do go out now - I'm a widow and I used to look forward to a Wednesday evening bingo night out."

Tracey, who has been going to the club since she was 18, said she made many friends there.

"It's going to have an effect because there's a lot of older people and it's sometimes the only time they get to socialise," she said.

For another member Lloyd, the club had a special place in his heart as it is where he met his wife.

He said: "She used to travel from Shepton Mallet to see me. I used to play skittles there for years. It's a shame, it will be missed."

A spokesperson from Patchway Town Council said on 1 October it was "verbally confirmed" by the club the insurance of the building had lapsed.

"The club cannot operate legally without insurance," they said.

"Patchway Sports and Social Club confirmed it would close the building with immediate effect due to the severe breach of this lease agreement. This decision wasn’t taken lightly.

"Patchway Town Council has expressed the need to consult all membership of the club is of paramount importance and should be done imminently.

"Members will be informed of a ballot process to consider the future of the club. “The council remains committed to this community asset and is deeply disappointed at the situation."

Patchway Sport and Social Club has been approached for comment.
