A man had to be cut free from his vehicle and flown to hospital in a serious condition after a head-on crash.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the A41 near Hinstock at 16:55 BST on Tuesday and found both vehicles "had sustained a significant amount of damage".

It said the trapped driver showed signs of deteriorating while efforts to cut him free were taking place, so "crews worked closely with paramedics to quickly but carefully lift the driver from the car".

He was then flown to the trauma centre at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, while the driver of the other car was driven to the same hospital with "potentially serious injuries".

Police closed the A41 in both directions "due to the serious nature of the collision, and to allow the emergency services to work safely at the scene", the fire service said.

The road then remained closed for a number of hours to allow the damaged vehicles to be recovered.
