A woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash.

Suzuki rider Jay Newby-Gallagher was in collision with a blue Renault Zoe on Northway at its junction with Dover Road in Maghull, Sefton, at about 08:30 BST, said Merseyside Police.

The 34-year-old's next of kin have been informed, said a force spokesperson.

Police said the car's driver, a 34-year-old woman from South Tyneside, had been taken into custody.

The force said road closures remained in place on the A59 Northway and Liverpool Road South between Hall Lane and Switch Island.

Det Sgt Kurt Timpson appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

He said: "We know this road would have been busy with commuters, buses and school traffic.

"I would appeal for anyone who was in the vicinity who saw or heard anything or thinks they captured something significant on their dashcam or mobile phone and hasn't already made themselves known to contact us."
