Abuse of children in care apology plaque proposed

A planning application to erect a plaque apologising to children abused in care in Jersey has been submitted.

If approved, the plaque would be fitted to Piquet House, Royal Square in St Helier.

Submitted on behalf of the Government of Jersey, the proposed plaque would read: "To the children abused while in the care of the States of Jersey: We failed you. We apologise for all you endured. We are truly sorry."

The application was submitted on Thursday and will be publicised with a decision expected to be made on 6 May.

Following allegations dating from the 1960s, a police operation was launched in 2006 leading to 192 people coming forward with 553 allegations of offences, including 315 at Haut de la Garenne children's home.

In 2017, a report into the care system in Jersey revealed decades of slavery, bullying and abuse.
