Teen hockey player 'assaulted by adults' at match

The incident is said to have taken place during a game between East Coast Hockey Club and Sudbury Hockey Club last Saturday

An investigation has been launched after two adults were reported to have assaulted a teenage hockey player during a match.

East Coast Hockey Club and Sudbury Hockey Club faced off in Lowestoft last Saturday, with the former securing a 2-1 win over the visitors.

Suffolk Police said during the game, a 14-year-old Sudbury player was allegedly assaulted by two players - believed to be adults - from the opposing team.

The force added: "We are investigating an assault during this match. No arrests have been made at this stage."

The match between East Coast 1 and Sudbury 2 took place shortly after 12:00 GMT and was part of the East Open – Men's Division 3 North East league.

In a statement issued to the BBC, Sudbury Hockey Club's chairman, Paul Rolfe, confirmed that red cards were issued to two players from East Coast.

"England Hockey will be following the red card disciplinary process, and the police are also investigating," he said.

"As there is an active investigation, we will have nothing further to add."

East Coast Hockey Club and Hockey England were contacted for comment.
