Teen's inquest suspended after crash arrest

An inquest into the death of a teenager has been opened and suspended, as police continue to investigate the crash that killed him.

Timothy Paul Jolley, 19, of Ulverston, Cumbria, died in the two-vehicle collision on the A5087 Coast Road at Rampside, near Barrow, on 6 June.

During a hearing at Cockermouth Coroner's Court, coroner Margaret Taylor said Mr Jolley was the front seat passenger of a Volkswagen, which was struck from behind by an Audi.

Cumbria Police said the Audi driver, a 20-year-old man from Barrow, had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while over the prescribed limit of a specified drug.

At the time of the crash, police had said the driver of the car in which Mr Jolley was travelling in had been airlifted to hospital.

A post-mortem examination revealed the cause of Mr Jolley's death was a neck injury.

"Despite the efforts of paramedics he died at the scene," Ms Taylor said.

The Barrow-born man was single at the time of his death and had been employed as a store assistant, Ms Taylor noted.

A number of directions were made in the case. Cumbria Police was asked to provide evidence following the conclusion of an investigation, and the North West Ambulance Service asked to supply a patient report form.

Ms Taylor confirmed inquest proceedings were being suspended as police continued to make enquiries.
