Firefighters tackled a large fire involving a pile of stacked wood in the early hours of Tuesday.

The blaze covered an area of about 100 sq m in Whittington, near Oswestry.

Two appliances were sent from Oswestry and Ellesmere Fire Stations at about 00:22 BST.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the fire remained unknown, but there was no evidence that the cause was suspicious.

The service said crews prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent fields and buildings.

It took about an hour and 20 minutes to put out the blaze.

They extinguished the fire using hose reel jets and drag rakes to check for remaining hot spots.

The road was closed during the incident, after which farmers working overnight in nearby fields were able to return to their work.
