One person has been seriously injured, and two others hurt, in what National Highways called a "serious multiple-vehicle collision" which closed the A27 in East Sussex in both directions.

The crash at about 07:25 BST on Thursday involved three vehicles on the A27 at Firle, according to East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

The A27 was closed between the A26 (Beddingham) and A2270 (Polegate) following the crash, and has since been reopened.

Three people were treated for injuries on the scene before two were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital by road, with one in a "serious condition", a South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb) spokesperson said.

National Highways said the crash involved "a vehicle crossing the central reservation".

The A27 between Drusillas roundabout and the Beddingham roundabout was closed as police investigated.

Police say the Selmeston and Common Lane junctions were also closed before being reopened.
