Poole Quay Hotel closed suddenly in 2024

Planning permission to demolish a hotel is set to be revoked after developers failed to fulfil their planning obligations.

MHA Burleigh Poole was granted permission in 2023 to replace Poole Quay Hotel, in Poole, with commercial units, flats and a new hotel, subject to a Section 106 agreement that required it to contribute to local services.

But in March 2024, the hotel closed suddenly and the firm went into liquidation.

A planning committee at Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) has been recommended to overturn permission for the quayside scheme when it meets on Thursday.

The proposal for the site - formerly the Quay Thistle Hotel - included five multi-use buildings of commercial units, 179 flats, a hotel and underground parking.

Councillors approved the plans with the condition of a Section 106 agreement, requiring the developer to contribute £655,948, towards local education, public transport and open space improvements.

The hotel was marketed by Savills on behalf of the receivers but has remained vacant since its sudden closure, which left at least one couple without a venue three months before their wedding day.

A BCP report recommends the planning committee "overturn the previous resolution to approve this application subject to the completion of a Section 106 agreement due to the failure of the applicant to enter into such a Section 106 agreement and to refuse planning permission".
