The death of a pupil has led to a secondary school reopening during the summer holidays to offer support to other children.

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Rhydywaun, in Penywaun, Rhondda Cynon Taf, said the Year 7 pupil died over the weekend.

South Wales Police said it was called at about 18:20 BST on 10 August with a report of a 12-year-old child suffering a medical episode at an address in Penbryn, Merthyr.

"The child was conveyed to hospital but sadly passed away," the police said. "The death is not being treated as suspicious."

The school said that "we have lost a very special and precious member of our school community" and that its "thoughts and prayers are very much with the family at this very sad time".

It will be open for a time on Wednesday and Thursday to offer assistance to any pupil. No details about the child who died have been released by the authorities.

Letters to inform parents of what had happened were sent on Monday.

The school said that it "will open for a couple of hours on Wednesday and Thursday when access to school staff, counsellors and the educational psychology service will be made available for any learner that requires support".
