A woman was punched and sexually assaulted when a stranger forced his way into her home.

The unknown man knocked on the victim's door in Ashington, Northumberland, between 23:45 BST on Tuesday and 02:20, Northumbria Police said.

The woman managed to fight the stranger off before he fled, the force added.

Police have asked the public to inform them if they know someone with "recently unexplained scratch marks to their face".

Det Ch Insp Les Goodliff said: "While incidents of this nature are extremely rare, we recognise the concern they cause within communities and want to reassure people that we have been carrying out extensive inquiries to identify the person responsible."
