A sharp metal bar, plastic and other items were recovered from Beverley Beck during an underwater search.

A diver from Humberside Police's Underwater Search Unit carried out the search as part of a six-week summer campaign to remind people about the dangers of open water.

PC Liam Whittington, of Humberside Police Marine Unit, said both natural and unnatural items found in open water can "quickly overcome a swimmer and cause fatalities".

Diver Andy Wiles found several items within about 20 minutes and emerged from the water covered in weeds.

"When you start moving you kick the mud up and visibility goes to zero pretty quick. I find things by doing a fingertip search," he said.

PC Whittington showed BBC Look North a "hefty piece of metal with a sharp edge" which was found at a slight angle in the water and not visible from the surface.

"It could cause quite a nasty injury if someone landed on it. Items found could also become entrapments.

"These areas look clean and nice to swim in but sometimes you don't know what might be down there," he said.

Natural hazards in open water include boulders, logs and trees that could have fallen into the water and weeds.

PC Whittington said: "Go and enjoy the local beauty spots but enjoy them safely - be mindful of your own abilities and what hazards could be in the water."
