A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after another man died following a serious assault in a busy residential street.
Essex Police said it was called to Ingrave Road, Brentwood, at about 15:30 BST on Thursday, following reports of the incident and closed part of the road.
Emergency services, including the air ambulance service, attended the scene but the man was pronounced dead. His family have been informed.
The 38-year-old man who was arrested remains in police custody.
Det Insp Lisa Hurrell said: "This incident took place on a busy residential street and I appreciate how concerning this must be for residents of Brentwood.
"Our officers arrived at the scene within two minutes and an arrest was made just over an hour after the report came into police.
A large police presence, including forensic investigators, remain at the scene.
The force asked for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.
A neighbour, who lives close to the building, which appears to be a sheltered accommodation, said it was "very out of the ordinary" for the area.
Brentwood Borough Council confirmed the properties in Four Oaks were council owned.
A spokesperson for the authority added: "We have been actively supporting and assisting the residents of Four Oaks, and will continue to support Essex Police with their investigations.”
