Communication boards have been installed in Guernsey for those with speech, language and communication difficulties.

The States of Guernsey said the boards at the play park at Beau Sejour leisure centre and Wigwam's adapted play area were a first for the island.

It said the boards helped promote inclusivity and ensured "everyone has a way to get their message across, no matter how they communicate".

Adults and children should find use in the boards, funded by Wigwam, which feature words with corresponding symbols that indicate specific activities or various vocabulary words.

Fiona Black said the communication boards help give people a voice

Fiona Black, clinical lead for children's speech, language and communication needs service said the boards have been a "labour of love."

She said: "The aim is to raise awareness of speech, language and communication difficulties and how something so simple can be really effective in giving people a voice.

"They are not just for use by children but will support a range of adults who also have long-term communication difficulties."

Specialist speech and language therapist for Children and Family Services Amelia Laurendet added: "It is important to realise that just because someone can't speak, it doesn't mean they have nothing to say."

More communication boards are set to be introduced within community spaces including early years settings.

The States of Guernsey said new boards would be available at Beau Sejor swimming pool and Guille-Allès which have been sponsored by Only Fools and Donkeys.
