Town's tater TikToker gets freedom of the borough

Ben Newman (aka Spudman) has built up a large online presence since taking to TikTok during the Covid-19 pandemic

Staffordshire Spudman Ben Newman has been granted the freedom of Tamworth by the local borough council.

The authority said Mr Newman was being given the honorary award in recognition of his entrepreneurship, innovation, and courage in the face of adversity.

Mr Newman started selling hot jacket potatoes from his trailer in 2003, and following the Covid-19 pandemic he embraced TikTok to build up his brand profile.

Now, thousands of people across the world follow him online as he prepares spuds for eager punters in Tamworth.

His success and popularity has helped to increase footfall in the town, the council said, meaning numerous other businesses benefit as well.

Mr Newman has also raised thousands of pounds for kidney charities, a cause close to his heart due to his own health issues.

Tamworth Borough Council said the decision to grant him the honour was unanimously backed at a full council meeting in July.

He will be given the accolade during a presentation at Tamworth Town Hall by The mayor of Tamworth, Gareth Coates.

'Pride and promotion'

The council said being made a freeman of the borough was recognition of an individual who had given Tamworth an exceptional service over a significant period of time in a voluntary, professional or philanthropic capacity.

Councillor Nova Arkney, portfolio holder for infrastructure, heritage and local economy, said the council was delighted to give Mr Newman the honour.

“Ben has really helped put Tamworth as a town on the map,” she said.

“With his millions of social media followers, press coverage and collaboration with celebrities, he really has contributed to the pride and promotion of our great town.”
