Historic pier admission charge to double

Visitors will have to pay a £2 entry fee from 5 April

One of the West Country's most famous piers is doubling its admission cost.

The Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, north Somerset, is increasing its charge from £1 to £2 from 5 April.

Bosses said the rising cost of inflation means they need to start charging their 600,000 annual visitors more to "preserve the structure".

Tim Moyle, pier director, said: "The price increase is vital to continue to maintain the historic structure - a Grade II-listed building - and protect its long-term future."

The new charge will still include free wi-fi and entry to the Pavilion and boardwalk

Last year, more than £1m was spent on "essential upkeep", Mr Moyle added.

The £1 admission fee, which was launched in 2014, has helped to pay for regular structural checks and upgrades.

Local residents who want to keep visiting for free can apply for a My Grand Pier Card through the pier's website.
