Scottish Water has started door-to-door visits across the Borders to help customers claim compensation for a loss of supplies last month.

About 6,000 customers were affected in the Duns, Eccles, Eyemouth, Coldingham and Chirnside areas of the region after the major fault at the Rawburn Treatment Works.

Customers in most towns and villages, who were cut off for more than a day, will be offered a payment of £45.

As well as door-to-door visits by Scottish Water staff, customer information centres are being set up in affected communities over the next few days.

Scottish Water said it had written to all the properties affected but so far only a small percentage had claimed compensation.

Staff will be going door-to-door until 28 September to help customers submit a claim.

An information unit will also be in Duns, Swinton, Leitholm, Coldstream, Foulden, Paxton and Burnmouth over the next 10 days.

Scottish Water's Kevin Roy said: "We've informed all affected customers of the compensation they might be entitled to and how they can submit a claim to us.

"But only a small number have contacted us so far so we are asking those who haven't yet to check the letter, get in touch with us and submit their claim as soon as possible.

"And we are going that extra mile by deploying more than 30 staff to work in these locations across the affected parts of Berwickshire between September 18 and 28 to help them submit compensation claims and so enable us to process their claim and ensure customers are properly compensated for the inconvenience."

Anyone missed by the visits can follow the instructions on the letter by going online, external or visiting an information unit.
