A driver who left a man injured by the roadside after his car mounted the pavement and hit him has been jailed.

Lewis Hobbs, 32, from Ramsbury Walk in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, was jailed for 27 months at Salisbury Crown Court on 23 October after he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Hobbs hit the 19-year-old on 7 February this year in Holbrook Lane, Trowbridge, but he did not stay and call an ambulance for the victim who had an injured leg.

He later handed himself in but PC Tom Richardson, from Wiltshire Police, said Hobbs had shown "absolutely no compassion or remorse".

The victim told Hobbs he had injured his leg and he asked him to call an ambulance but Hobbs instead drove off.

When he handed himself in, his Honda Civic was taken for forensic examination and showed signs of damage.

"It was very clear and obvious that the pedestrian had sustained a severe injury from the collision yet Hobbs drove off and then failed to report the collision to police," said PC Richardson.

"The judge commented on the fact that as drivers, we all make mistakes.

"However, it is what happens next that is important and Hobbs clearly showed absolutely no compassion or remorse.

"This was quite frankly shocking behaviour and I am glad the severity of his actions has been reflected in a custodial sentence."

Hobbs was also disqualified from driving for 35 months and ordered to pay a £228 surcharge.
