Plans to introduce overnight parking for up to 10 motorhomes in a car park on the Lincolnshire coast have been approved.

Dedicated parking spaces would be created in Cleethorpes at the southern end of Thrunscoe Lane car park, near the boating lake.

It comes after previous calls for a facility in the area and a ban on motorhomes using the Marine Walk car park, which was introduced last November.

Campervans would be able to use the site for short stays of up to 48 hours.

Approval was given at a North East Lincolnshire Council planning committee meeting on Wednesday, with the condition that the facility would close over the winter months to address flooding concerns.

Officials also raised concerns about litter and the provision of a chemical waste disposal point.

Councillor Janet Goodwin noted a previous incident in the resort when “human waste" was disposed of in a beck, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Meanwhile, Councillor Edward Kaczmarek said: “One of my concerns is they’ll generate bags of rubbish and then just dump them as they leave.”

A council officer said conditions would be imposed, as part of the plan, regarding toilet waste disposal and general litter.

The approval also required a nearby toilet block to remain open when the site was in use between March and October.

However, others welcomed the move, with one official saying it was “long overdue”.

Councillor Paul Bright, an owner himself, said: “There’s not, certainly in the UK, short-term stopovers regularly available.”

The plans - first announced in April last year - also received the backing of CAMpRA - the Campaign for Real Aires (motorhome stopovers).

It said the scheme would encourage more visitors to the resort and contribute to the local economy.
