Former women's footballer on Strictly line-up

Ex-Birmingham City Women FC star and now pundit, Karen Carney, will be on Strictly Come Dancing

"She used to be a breakdancer when she was younger... obviously a very different kind of dancing but she's definitely got rhythm."

Perhaps not what you would expect to hear about former Birmingham City Women star and now football pundit, Karen Carney, from Solihull.

But her fellow former Blues teammate, Kerys Harrop, said she had seen plenty of Karen's moves on the dance floor, which is why she believes she will do well as one of the contestants in the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing.

"It's just whether she can transfer that to the Latin and the ballroom... I think that's why I'm really excited, because I know she can dance, but seeing it in a different style will be interesting," she said.

As well as the Blues, Karen also played for Chelsea, Arsenal and England.

She is now the lead female pundit for both men and women's football across TNT and ITV.

With 144 caps, she is also England's third most capped player, competing at four World Cups, four European Championships and the London Olympics, before retiring in 2019.

"I'm definitely used to her more in a football kit," said her former teammate.

Ms Harrop was captain of the Blues and spent 20 years at the club.

"Kaz is quite an introverted character, quite shy, but definitely that's come out more as she's got into the punditry," she said.

"In terms of the dancing side, she kind of hid it as a bit of a hidden talent... so it'll be good to see her doing it live on TV in front of millions of people - she can't really afford to be shy there can she?

"She'll come over really well, she's a really nice person, really bubbly."

Ms Harrop added that Karen is competitive, which would bode well for the competition.

"To make it to England and play in World Cup tournaments and win trophies, you've definitely got to be competitive," she said.

"It's great exposure for the women's game, coming off the back of the Euros as well, it's kind of perfect timing to have another female footballer on."
