A household waste recycling centre (HWRC) will shut its doors for good next month.

Kirklees Council earlier confirmed the Nab Lane waste centre at Birstall would close, while opening hours would be reduced at two other tips.

The Nab Lane site will close to the public from 16:00 GMT on Sunday 10 November, with hours cut at the Bromley Farm and Meltham centres from the same date.

The council said the changes would save nearly £200,000 over the next two financial years.

Following the closure of the Nab Lane site, the local authority said the nearest alternative tip for residents was at Weaving Lane in Dewsbury.

Bromley Farm will be shut on Wednesdays and Thursdays, while Meltham will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Residents earlier spoke of their disappointment at the council's decision to close the Birstall tip.

A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: "We have had to make difficult decisions in the current financial climate but this proposal still leaves Birstall and Birkenshaw with the industry-recommended journey time to their nearest HWRC."

They added that the closure of Nab Lane would put Kirklees "at a level of service comparable to that of Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield when comparing density of provision".
