A developer has been chosen to build hundreds of homes on a new estate on the edge of Leicester.

About 560 houses will be created as part of the next stage of work on the Ashton Green development, near Beaumont Leys.

Leicester City Council has confirmed the housebuilding will be delivered by Tilia Homes, as part of a larger plan to deliver about 3,000 homes along with community and health facilities, employment land and retail over 320 acres.

Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said Ashton Green was "essential" to meeting the needs of a growing city.

He added: "It's an extremely ambitious long-term project, so it's good news that the city council and the Diocese of Leicester – which owns part of the land – have now selected a preferred developer for the next phase of development."

Tilia Homes, which has already been involved in homebuilding at Ashton Green, is part of the untypical group.

Amerjit Atwal, regional managing director for untypical's central region, said: "We are delighted to have been selected as the preferred developer as part of Leicester's ambitious growth plans."

The first 100 houses at Ashton Green were completed in 2020, with 245 of the 307 second phase properties now also built and occupied.

A third 441-home phase is expected to get under way next year, with Tilia's development to follow, with work also expected to begin in 2026, subject to planning permission.
