Traders at Bilston Outdoor Market are to relocate to a temporary home next month for a year of refurbishment work.

They will be based at Bert Turner Boulevard, High Street and Church Street, with opening days and times remaining the same, City of Wolverhampton Council said.

The indoor market will remain open as usual during the work.

The £5.2m scheme will also improve the pedestrian access from the neighbouring bus and Metro station. Traders will move to their new home from 24 October.

A flexible multi-use events and market space will be created along with new car parking and taxi drop-offs, new retail units, public toilets and a taller canopy over stalls.

Some existing structures will be demolished and the market's entrance improved, the council added.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, cabinet member for resident services, said: “We had good feedback from traders and residents through consultation and have developed attractive plans that will enhance Bilston market for everyone.

“While the improvement works are taking place, I would urge visitors to make themselves familiar with the temporary outdoor market and continue to support their local traders.

“It is important for our traditional local centres to flourish, and this scheme builds substantially on the investment already made in Bilston in recent years.”
