Developers said there was a "clear need" for the site to be transformed

A former pub is to be demolished to make way for a new care home in Sheffield.

Plans have been approved by the city council for the Wordsworth Tavern site in Parson Cross to be knocked down and a 68-bed residence built in its place.

The care home would be "luxurious" and would include landscaped gardens, according to planning documents.

“There is a clear need for the site to be developed to increase the quality of a building that serves the community," the application said.

Developer Life Property Construction also planned to create 17 parking spaces and two disabled bays at the site on Margetson Crescent.

The care home would provide accommodation for residents requiring nursing, dementia or residential care, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Only one neighbour objected to the planning application and the council received four letters of support for the scheme.
