Air pollution alerts to be available in Surrey

Alerts warning of high levels of air pollution are being made available in part of Surrey.

They will be triggered if more than 10% of the area is expected to exceed safe air quality levels, and will provide three-day forecasts.

The programme is being run by Mole Valley District Council, which adopted a new air quality strategy in July, with a five year plan to reduce pollution across the district.

Rosemary Hobbs, cabinet member for community services, said it was to "help residents with health conditions plan ahead and reduce their exposure to air pollution".

She said the council hoped the service would raise awareness of air quality across the district and "encourage everyone to consider their impact on air pollution, particularly on high-risk days".

She added: "Carpooling, working from home, or choosing to walk, cycle, or use public transport are all ways to help protect public health."
