A man has been arrested for drink-driving after a motorist drove nine miles down the M4 in the wrong direction.

Wiltshire Police received numerous calls after a Ford Fiesta was spotted travelling eastbound on the westbound carriageway near junction 17 (Chippenham) on Sunday at about 04:30 BST.

The vehicle was tracked to McDonald's in Bath Road, where a 63-year-old man was arrested.

He has been released on bail pending further investigations.

A force spokesperson said officers dealt with five separate suspected drink drivers across the county on Saturday night.

"Remember that the limits around drink driving are in place to save lives.

"Even one or two drinks can impair your ability to react on the road and reduce your coordination and concentration," they added.
