Former Rangers player Kyle Hutton has been charged over the death of a woman who was hit by a truck in South Lanarkshire.

It is alleged the 33-year-old was driving a Mitsubishi pick-up truck on Farmeloan Road in Rutherglen on Saturday evening when it hit Victoria Cairns.

Ms Cairns, 40, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but died on Wednesday.

Hutton was arrested and charged in connection with road traffic offences - he was due in court earlier this week, but did not make the appearance.

The Crown office confirmed the case against him remains active.

The BBC understands there are no further court dates scheduled for the case at present.

Hutton joined Rangers in 2010 and remained with the club until 2015. He has since played for clubs including St Mirren, Queen of the South and Cowdenbeath.

The midfielder currently plays for Gartcairn.

Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have dash-cam footage to get in touch, external.
