Police have been granted extra powers to disperse groups of people in parts of Tamworth ahead of a football match later.

National League team Tamworth host Scunthorpe United at 15:00 BST and Staffordshire Police have been monitoring the town centre since 10:00, with the order in place until midnight.

It has been granted in response to community concerns and will help minimise the potential of anti-social behaviour and prevent incidents arising, the force said.

"The order will protect local people from experiencing harassment, alarm and distress and also protect businesses from any potential criminal damage," Insp Rachel Darby, of Tamworth local policing team (LPT), said.

The order covers the A513, including Tamworth Railway Station, Bolebridge Street, B5000 to Kettlebrook Road, A5 Wilnecote Bypass, A51, Lichfield Street, Aldergate and Upper Gungate.

"We want everyone to enjoy the game safely without concerns about anti-social behaviour or other incidents," Insp Darby said.

"This will mean we are able to balance the rights of those visiting the area with those who live and work in Tamworth and mean that we can take robust action if incidents occur."
