Police are investigating after a 50-year-old man and his dog were attacked by a gang of men armed with weapons at a property in South Lanarkshire.

Emergency services, including firearms officers, were called to an address on Skye Road in Rutherglen just after midnight on Tuesday.

The man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and then transferred to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary to treat a serious hand injury.

His dog is being treated at a local veterinary clinic and police said inquiries are ongoing.

Officers are investigating whether the attack could be linked to a gangland feud across central Scotland.

Operation Portaledge was launched earlier this year in response to a series of assaults, shootings and firebombing incidents in Glasgow and Edinburgh since March.
