The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta is under way for the 179th year.
The event runs for a week and includes sailing and rowing competitions, live music and barrel rolling.
Organisers said the event costs more than £180,000 each year to stage with sponsors, traders and public donations funding it.
They added there were more than 300 races and events during the week with about 600 competitors taking part.
Laura Campbell, co-chair of the Dartmouth and District Chamber of Commerce, said: "The whole regatta is about celebrating the River Dart."
She said the best thing for her was "just seeing the town come alive, seeing people going around, just seeing the smiling faces of people".
Jo Hinde, co-chair of the Dartmouth and District Chamber of Commerce, said: "This is our biggest event in the calendar and it comes right at the end of the summer holidays so it sort of builds up towards the big regatta."
