A large number of cannabis plants have been found at the scene of a house fire.

The blaze on London Road in Carlisle, close to the Brook Street junction, was spotted at 07:00 BST on Monday.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said the building was empty when crews arrived.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: "Officers carried out searches of the property following the fire and seized a significant number of cannabis plants, with an estimated street value of £135,000."

The road was closed for about two and a half hours as the fire was tackled, but has since reopened.

Police asked for anyone with information to come forward.
