'Treehouse' classroom bringing outside in

A classroom has been turned into a "treehouse" with log benches instead of chairs, in an attempt to improve health and stimulate pupils.

Lindale Primary School near Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, sits among many holiday homes but fewer permanent residences, meaning it has to widen its catchment area.

The refurbished classroom features birch trees and a woodland theme.

Teacher Sam Barker said it takes the outside and brings it inside while encouraging activities to aid physical development.

The classroom encourages sensory stimulation

Ms Barker, who designed the classroom alongside a company called Cool Canvas, said the students were "shocked" when they saw it.

She added there are pupils, especially post-Covid, that do not have the physical development they might have had previously.

She said replacing chairs with logs allows children to hold their body weight up while being comfortable and, unknowingly, strengthening their core muscles.

Ms Barker believes the classroom is already having an impact.

She saw one pupil who had been recommended for physical development assistance standing on her tiptoes on one of the logs, using coordination and balance while having a "great time".
