SEND school and child care home at risk of closure

Parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have warned that the closure of a school would have a "massive impact".
The Sheiling School in Thornbury, near Bristol, is an independent SEND school and children's home.
Last Wednesday, parents were informed that a consultation process is ongoing with staff. Children residing in the care home were issued a six-week notice to leave.
In a letter seen by the BBC, Justin Davey, the CEO of the school, said it is "a very difficult time for all our staff".
He also added that he was unable to provide further details, but would keep parents informed of any developments.
The school caters for children and young people aged between six and 19-years-old, offering day and residential placements.
It says it aims to provide pupils with a holistic education, as well as academic education and a range of therapies.
Sarah and Paul's child has been enrolled at the school since 2016.
They said it has been "absolutely amazing" in helping him after his time in a mainstream educational setting.
“It’s stressful, but how it affects us two is almost irrelevant," Paul said.
"How it can affect him going forward is huge."
They added that their concern is finding another suitable school.
Denise's son has been enrolled on a day placement at the school for eight years.
“The school has done a fantastic job with him.
"It’s the making of him, and I can’t explain how it’s going to upset him," she said.
Chelsea was served a six-week notice to move her son out of the care home last week.
She is concerned about finding a suitable alternative for him, as well as one which is close enough for her to visit frequently.
"This is our children’s future and it’s so uncertain," she said.
"They’ve got a right to basic education just like everybody else.
"You can’t fault the education they are receiving here - they go above and beyond every single day."
Graham and Zoe enrolled their son at the school after he struggled to settle elsewhere.
They said The Sheiling School is "completely right" for their son and he is "thriving", as it suits his needs.
Zoe said: "Not all SEND children are the same - it's really important to look at the individual child."
A spokesperson from South Gloucestershire Council said: “We are aware that The Sheiling School is considering the future of the provision and we are currently in discussion with Trustees to understand the impact for the local area.”
