Members of the public are being invited to visit gardens during open days in the grounds of two hospices.

Severn Hospice will be open at Apley, Telford, on Sunday and Bicton, Shrewsbury, on 26 May.

It paid tribute to an "incredible team of volunteers" who contribute, but also said a full-time paid employee on a six-month contract was being sought.

The grounds at both sites extend over 20 acres.

The hospice said this July "marks our 35th anniversary, a milestone only made possible thanks to the community's support for us in that time".

Head gardener Joel Richards said it was "so nice" to welcome in the community on these open days.

He added: "Not only do they get to enjoy a great day out, we also get to thank them for their support and show off what they’ve helped create."

'Wonderful spaces'

Volunteers will share gardening tips, plant lovers can buy home-grown plants and at Bicton there is also a craft fair.

Families going there this year can explore a newly upgraded children's trail - including wooden characters from The Gruffalo books - with improved accessibility for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Mr Richards said: "It's a big year for us and our gardens have always played a really important part in the care we give.

"It's such a privilege to look after and develop such wonderful spaces that bring pleasure and comfort to patients and their family and friends."

The hospice is also looking for "someone with a bit of energy" to work for five days a week "as a summer sort of job", he added.
