Two held after girl dies in crash near play area

Two men have been arrested after a four-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by a car near a children's play area.
West Midlands Police said two women were walking on the pavement with the girl on Upper Highgate Street, near Birmingham city centre, at about 21:45 BST, when they were struck by a silver Corsa.
Advanced life support was given to the child but she died at the scene.
Two cars and four pedestrians were involved in the incident, according to emergency services.
The two women were treated by medics for serious but not life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital for further treatment.
Another child assessed by ambulance crews was unharmed.
Two men, aged 21 and 24, were taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs, police said.
"We're in the early stages of our investigation but we believe a grey Mercedes was in close proximity to the Corsa and we're currently treating it as a collision involving two cars," a statement read.
The vehicles and drivers remained at the scene, police added.
'Pain of loved ones'
Det Sgt Paul Hughes said crash investigators were doing all they could to get answers to what happened.
"A young girl has tragically lost her life and I can only imagine the pain her loved ones are going through at this awful time," he said.
He added he was particularly keen to speak to anyone with dash cam footage.
He also urged people not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident.
"We need to deal with facts so we can complete a thorough investigation and provide the answers the girl's family and friends deserve," he explained.
