Police name 72-year-old killed by van

Police have named a 72-year-old pedestrian who died after being hit by a van in Houghton-le-Spring on Monday evening.

The crash happened at 18.05 GMT outside of the Best-One shop on Kitchener Terrace in the New Herrington area.

Trevor Appleton, who lived in New Herrington, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital where he later died.

His family said: "Trevor was a loving brother and uncle, and he will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends."

'Wicked humour'

In a statement, Mr Appleton's family added: “Trevor enjoyed meeting new people and socialising.

"Those who knew him admired his wicked sense of humour.

“We would like to thank those who remained at the scene to help Trevor in his final moments, as well as everyone who assisted in the emergency services."

Sgt Ben Rutherford described Mr Appleton's death as "tragic".

He said many people had come forward to assist with the investigation, but he appealed for other witnesses to come forward.

Northumbria Police said the driver of the white Peugeot Partner van is assisting officers with their enquiries.
