Police say the pair were "in the right place at the right time" to help officers

Two delivery drivers have been awarded for their "courage and bravery" after they stepped in to help police during a brawl.

Nicky Heginbottom, 42 and Paul Grundy, 53, were taking a break at service station just off the A1 in Washington, when they heard officers were reportedly being attacked at a nearby hotel.

Ch Insp Paul Stewart, of Northumbria Police, who presented the men with a commander's compliment award, said they were "in the right place at the right time".

"We would always discourage the public from risking their own safety but we're very grateful for their assistance," he said.

The force said police were called to a disturbance at the hotel on 15 March involving guests being verbally abusive towards staff, which turned violent when police arrived.

It said "without hesitation" the men jumped to the assistance of the officers to help detain two suspects.

"When our officers are called to a disturbance, we’re not always 100 per cent sure what situation we’re going to be faced with," Ch Supt Stewart said.

"In this case, the mood changed in an instant and it was clear we needed to detain the suspects as quickly as possible whilst we waited for backup."

'Pride of place'

Mr Heginbottom, who celebrated his birthday on the day he collected his award, said it was "definitely a special way" to mark the occasion.

"It wasn’t a nice situation to stumble upon," he said.

"But we are glad we were able to help the officers."

Mr Grundy added: "It’s a great feeling to be recognised, although I do feel we acted in the same way anyone would.

"This award is going to take pride of place in my home," he added.

Two 18-year-old men were arrested and later charged with assault. They are due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court later this year.
