Three people have been taken to hospital following a "large scale" disturbance at a sports event in Derby.

Officers were called to a kabaddi match in Elvaston Lane, in Alvaston, at about 15:50 BST on Sunday.

One person was seriously hurt, Derbyshire Police said, and a large police presence would remain in the area for some time.

Derby City Council leader Baggy Shanker said the authority was "extremely saddened" to hear what had happened and his thoughts were with those affected.

He added the authority would work with police over the coming days.

One nearby resident said she saw "at least 40 cars if not more" in the area

A woman who lives nearby told BBC Radio Derby she understood it was a ticketed event.

The resident, who did not want to give her name, said: "There was noise and people were shouting.

"I had a look out of the window and there was a group of men. They were gesticulating as if they were angry or upset.

"The air ambulance was circulating trying to land and the whole area was covered in police.

"Police cars just kept coming for hours, ambulances, dog units - at least 40 cars if not more.

"We saw lots of people come out of the event. Some people we spoke to said a group of people turned up at the event, who were not invited and they had weapons."

Another resident said he has "not seen such a large police presence for a number of years"

Another resident, who was returning home from the gym said he first saw a few police vehicles "screaming down" Harvey Road towards Alvaston.

"I arrived at home to hear more sirens and eventually within a few minutes a helicopter was circulating overhead," he said.

"Then there were a number of estate police vehicles, which I assume were armed response vehicles and police vans with sirens screaming up Church Street.

"I've not seen such a large police presence for a number of years."
