School children are being encouraged to take part in a treasure hunt-style game to get active as part of a council initiative.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has teamed-up with Street Tag, a smartphone app, to place virtual tags around the borough for people to go out and collect.

The game will run for three, eight-week long seasons and the first one, which is aimed at local schools, will end on 6 August.

Tags can be placed or collected in places like parks, footpaths and bridleways, and the council said 17 schools have signed up for the project.

Schools will also be able to compete against each other for points, with prizes awarded to the top performers.

Andrew Durrant, an executive director at the council, said: “It’s a fun, accessible and inclusive way for anyone connected to a school to get active, enjoy time outside together, while exploring some of the many spaces and places our borough has to offer.”

Seun Oshinaike, founder of Street Tag, said: "We’re excited to continue forging partnerships... to help families and communities get physically active in a fun, sustainable, and accessible way.”

The second season, also for schools, is due to run in the autumn.
