Sincil Bank development gets council backing

The area around Lincoln City's LNER Stadium will receive a transport upgrade

Plans to improve walking and cycling infrastructure in Lincoln’s Sincil Bank area have been endorsed by county councillors.

The £3 million Town Deal project set to be implemented by City of Lincoln Council includes creating a new green corridor for cyclists and pedestrians between the entrance to Lincoln City FC’s LNER Stadium and Kesteven Street.

One councillor, Kevin Clarke, said the project was “very key” for the area. He added: “Speaking as an ex-resident of Sincil Bank, I knew how that area was going down, and this will improve it."

As the highways authority for the project, Lincolnshire County Council is assisting the city council with the development.

On Monday, county councillors recommended that the scheme be approved and contractors be appointed to start work.

The project, which is expected to get under way this summer, will include a revised one-way system and several aesthetic improvements, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Although some local residents have been hesitant about the scheme, with some labelling it a “waste of money” on social media, Mr Clarke said: “The consultation has taken place, and residents have had the opportunity to attend these meetings and put their case forward.

“As in all cases, you get some that want it and some that don’t want it.”

During the meeting of the Highways and Transport Scrutiny Committee, Sam Edwards, head of highways infrastructure, said the scheme aimed to improve “alternative travel patterns” and followed a residents’ permit parking scheme implemented in the area last year.

He warned that there would be some disruption to local businesses and residents due to road closures when work begins, but said the council would appoint a public liaison to provide updates on the project's progress.
