Torbay roadworks force 10-week closure

Part of a road in Torquay will be shut for up to 10 weeks, a council has said.
Torbay Council said part of Shiphay Lane would be closed to all vehicles from 15 July while the rebuilding work was carried out.
It said work to reconstruct the highway between Oak Park Avenue and the junction with Shiphay Avenue would be completed in two phases.
It added that residents would be unable, external to access driveways within the sections being excavated - including at night.
'Plan extra time'
The road would be under a 24-hour closure between Dairy Hill and the junction with Shiphay Avenue, it said.
The project was being carried out by SWISCo and Cormac Contracting Ltd, the council said.
It said the first phase of work would be Oak Park Close to Shiphay Avenue, followed by Oak Park Close to Oak Park Avenue, and a signed diversion route would direct vehicles along Shiphay Avenue, Marldon Road, Dart Avenue and Exe Hill onto Shiphay Lane.
Contractors were to dig 43cm (17in) and remove the current road material, it said.
They would then build up the structure again and finish with two or three layers of surfacing.
There would be no disruption to the pavements, it said.
The council said it recognised there was "never a good time to close a road".
"It is hoped that by doing most of the work over the school summer holidays, when traffic in the area is lower, the works can be completed as quickly as possible," it said.
Waste and recycling collections would remain the same during the closure, officials said.
Torbay Council advised people to plan extra time for journeys.
