A woman who fell and broke multiple bones while walking in the Peak District has thanked mountain rescue volunteers who came to her aid.

Linda O’Neill slipped on mud walking down from the Great Ridge near Castleton at about 08:30 BST on Saturday.

She dislocated her ankle and broke it in three places, as well as fracturing both her lower leg bones.

But she says the 10 Edale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) volunteers who came to her aid did a “fantastic” job before handing her over to emergency services.

She said: “With the help of what3words they were able to locate me quickly, and I can't fault the treatment they gave me on scene, before transporting me down the hill on a stretcher.

“They kept me positive throughout, hence the smile, or maybe that was the morphine.”

She also praised the East Midlands Ambulance Crew from Buxton who relayed her to hospital in Stockport where she remains for treatment.

“It's reassuring to know that help and support from the MRT is there when you need it most," she said. "Thank you to everyone who helped."

An Edale MRT spokesperson said: “Just as some team members were leaving their homes to start the Bank Holiday fundraising, external, we had a request from the controller to an incident in the Mam Farm area.

“A lone walker had slipped on steep and muddy ground between the Great Ridge and Mam Farm.

“A local team member was the first on scene who started to give primary care. As other team members arrived on scene with kit, the offending leg was splinted and the walker stabilised onto our stretcher to be conveyed down to the awaiting ambulance at the roadhead.”

Busy day

The incident was the first of several for the Edale MRT on Saturday.

A fallen walker with an injured knee above Stanage was stretchered to a nearby car park at about 12:30, where friends took them to hospital.

Edale alongside Buxton MRT helped a walker who had fallen into a stream near Small Clough at about 15:20.

And at about 16:40 an off-road motorcyclist came off his vehicle on the track above Beeley Top Farm and was unable to move with potential hip and spine injuries.

Edale volunteers fundraising nearby joined ambulance crews to give pain relief before loading him into a vacuum mattress to be transferred to the ambulance.
