Schools and roads were shut as snow and icy conditions brought some disruption across Cumbria on Tuesday.

Nine schools, external in the Westmorland and Furness and Cumberland Council areas closed early, but were expected to re-open on Wednesday.

There was also travel disruption, with roads including the A591, a major route through the Lake District national park, becoming impassable due to snow.

Councils also warned they were unable to collect bins in some areas.

Met Office yellow warnings for snow and ice were in place for Scotland, much of northern England and north Wales throughout Tuesday.

Most of Cumbria will be under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice until 23:59 GMT on Thursday 18 Jan, meaning snow showers are expected to cause disruption for multiple days, the Met Office said.

The A591 Ambleside Road became impassible because of snow in both directions from the A5075 Borrans Road (Waterhead) to the A592 Rayrigg Road (Cook's House Corner, Windermere).

Westmorland and Furness Council said their gritting crew collectively travelled over 840 miles (1,350km) on Tuesday morning in preparation for the snow fall.

They advised residents to be cautious when travelling, especially in rural areas.

Both Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council warned on Tuesday they were unable to collect bins from some areas due to snow and icy weather conditions.

They asked residents to leave their refuse and recycling out for collection and said they would collect them as soon as they were able.
